• What is Root Canal

Root Canal Therapy is a treatment when a tooth is harmed from cavity, external  trauma, continuous irritation. The nerve is inflamed or necrotic from those insults. Some people say “ to kill  the nerve” , but it’s not killing the nerve. It’s removing the diseased nerve and cleaning the canal and to seal the canal to prevent further infection process.

  • The process of Root Canal

Nerve is necrotic from caries.
Tooth is numbed locally  and entrance to the tooth is made.

Using instruments, debris in canal is removed and cleaned.
Prevent further infection by filling the canals.

  • What happens after Root Canal?

After root canal therapy, tooth is blocked from nutrient and blood supply. Therefore tooth is prone to fracture and requires a protection. And if a lot of tooth structure is missing from carious insult, a supporting post and build-up materials are needed to house a protective cap, such as a crown.

  • How successful is a Root Canal?

The root canal is not simple anatomical structure and many minor root spread from major root trunk. Sometimes it’s not possible to cleanse out everything from the canals. Once sufficient irritants and debris are removed, body’s immune function fights the bacteria and irritant. According to research, root canal therapy has success rate of greater than 90 %.

  • What is Apicoectomy?
When root canal fails or root canal  is blocked, small part of root is sectioned and removed. Most of infections in the canal is located in end tip, tooth is left alone and just remove the tip of  the canal. Therefore restoration of the tooth is possible after apicoectormy.

  • Tooth reimplantation?
Some molar tooth’s canal is very closely located to a nerve trunk and is risky. Re-implantation can be tried if root tip is too close to vital structures of body; therefore instead of performing apicoectomy, tooth is extracted and treated for infection. After that tooth is reinserted to the socket.  This therapy is more successful if timing is short.
